Candy Corn: Not A Gift From The Sugar Goddesses

Candy is an important part of a happy life. In “Lewis Black Hates Candy Corn: A Rebuttal,” Michael Ian Black praises candy corn in opposition to Lewis Black’s insistence that candy corn is horrible. Michael Ian Black represents Halloween tradition, candy corn makers, and all the trick-or-treaters of America in his essay as he defends the tasty treat. However defensive Michael Ian Black is, he is wrong, and Lewis Black is right. Candy corn is simply not a delicious treat.

Since candy corn is candy, the taste should be the most important aspect. Michael Ian Black states that candy corn tastes "like it was made out of magic" (138). He then goes on "If magic had a taste," (138) which means it obviously does not, and therefore, nothing can taste like magic. Lewis Black thinks it tastes "like it was made out of oil" (qtd. in Black 138). That, too, is not true, but the spirit of the statement is. Candy should not taste like oil. Candy should taste good. Oil does not taste good. Candy corn does not taste good. It tastes like chemicals, the kind of taste that develops when people are in an enclosed,un-vented space while they are cleaning with Windex.

Even though Halloween causes a boost in sales, candy corn is simply part of tradition. It is not a popular treat at any other time of year. Therefore, it is simply not popular, and not a scrumptious snack.

  1. I agree! I've never enjoyed Candy Corn, and I have yet to meet anyone who does. I don't even remember how it tastes anymore because it's been so long since I've had any! For as long as I can remember, I used to pick out Starbursts, Jolly Ranchers, Almond Joys, Snickers, Kit Kats, Butterfingers, and Lollipops. My siblings tend to bring garbage bags full of candy every year, and I steal from them every year!(or we use the candy as gambling currency in card games or other bets).
I agree to the fact that it is a traditional treat that only comes around during the Halloween season. As stated above, Candy Corn is not sold anytime other than October/November. It's surprising to see people continue to purchase this non-delectable treat.

  4. I agree because from what I always remembered in elementary school and high school, was that my teachers would always give out Candy Corn around the beginning of October till the end of November. I never really liked Candy Corn and it always looked weird to me. Usually I would stick my hand in the bag of candy and swirl around the bag and pray I didn't accidentally pick Candy Corn. Thinking about it now gives me the shivers yuck ! Snickers, Baby Ruth , Star bursts ,and Jolly Ranchers were usually my favorite. My family really don't celebrate Halloween or go out to trick a treat but for some reason my mother always made sure there was candy in the house especially Candy Corn. Candy Corn does have a Halloween look to it as well, the color to it and the way it is shape. It actually looks like a witch pointy hat. It is very traditional. The color and the way it is shaped reminds you that Halloween is near even fall. I'm shock that people actually go out and buy them till this day its been around for years.

  5. I agree. Candy corn isn't my favorite kind of candy I I've tried. Of course I would eat it when I had it because it wasn't the worst the worst candy. There’s so many types of candy’s that candy corn isn't popular at all. People prefer to eat chocolate or something else. Even when I was little I didn’t like candy corn as much as I liked other types of candy like kit-Kat, Butterfinger, starbursts, skittles, etc. I've always loved candy no matter what the flavor is, but I do prefer some over others. Candy corn is very traditional during Halloween and I don’t mind eating it.

  6. I agree. I do not like candy corn at all. Ever since i was younger the taste was never something i enjoyed. I can understand what the author meant by an oily taste. to me, it did have an oily taste. i haven't tried candy corn in years and i don't plan too. Everybody associates candy corn with Halloween and its displeasing taste. A lot of people give out candy corn instead of the good candy. good candy like snickers, receese, and the good fruity candies. Candy corn will always be around for what reason i do not know.

  8. I disagree. I enjoy candy corn. Although it's not the best tasting candy out on the market, I believe we were tricked into liking it as a treat, because of Halloween. I can remember as early as nine years old, taking the white top part of the candy and tricking my brother into believing I'd lost a tooth. It was hilarious watching his reaction as I kept pulling teeth ( the candy ) from my pocket. He would gasp and gasp until he realized I was faking...Haha! ( I think the sugary smell gave me away!) What great memories! Regardless of it's critics, candy corn will continue to serve it's annual purpose, and will go down in the annals of time as America's most unpopular, popular ( greasy) good candies! Here's to you Candy Corn!!!

  9. I agree, candy corn doesn't taste good to me. It tastes like compressed sugar. When I used to go trick or treating a few years ago, all I cared about was getting a months supply of candy. Me and a bunch of friends trick or treated in gated communities (Perfect places to trick or treat) and I remember getting handfuls amount of candy. They varied from full sized babe ruth bars to single-wrapped reese's cups. After filling bag up to hit's maximum capacity, I realized that I had a good amount of candy corn. Ate one, cringed from the taste and give the rest to my friends. Til this day I believe that candy corn is like small samples of diabetes.

  10. I agree. I think that candy corn is disgusting and I always have. In my lifetime, I only recall meeting two people who said they loved candy corn and I remember thinking that they, and their taste buds, were odd. I do not know how to describe the taste of candy corn but it is very unpleasant. There were a few times when I ate it because I forgot how bad it was, or wondering if I was remembering it wrongly or if my taste buds had changed, and I remember spitting it out and disgarding or giving it away each time. In my opinion, candy corn is the worst candy on the market, though I do not often see or recognize it in stores. This is probably because, as the original statement stated, it is only popular during Halloween. I understand that it is part of tradition, but I wonder why and how candy corn came to part of the Halloween tradition and not good candies such as Nerds, Skittles, or even Tootsie Rolls. Anywho, I suppose if it is making people happy (the ones who aren't cringing and spitting it out) and adding to the holiday spirit in any way, it can be good.

  11. I disagree, candy corn is a holiday tradition, and it isn’t my favorite candy, but it reminds me of my Halloween, my favorite holiday. My mom would always buy bags of candy corn before Halloween to get us in the spirit. To me, Candy corn reminds me of pumpkins, trick or treating, sugar highs, and silly costumes. Candy corn reminds me of my childhood and how much fun I had running around on Halloween nights with my friends and family. Candy corn would fill the bottom of my pillowcase. It would be my last resort to enjoying the end of my Halloween. Without candy corn Halloween just wouldn’t be the same.

  12. I tend to agree with the masses on their dislike towards candy corn. Although as a child i never got a chance to take part in holiday festivities due to being brought up as a Jehovas witness, my friends outside of the religion and in school always made it a point to share their goods with me. I remember clearly that out of the variety of treats i'd get from my friends the candy corn was always the first to be given away. I am very indifferent towards its taste as it is neither delicious nor excruciatingly disgusting. I believe its relevance lies more with its color than its fan base or taste preference. Its much like the candy cane for christmas although id have to say i enjoy the candy cane much more. Its relevance has become strictly for traditional purposes and im sure there are people who enjoy its taste and meaning when halloween comes around. I always used to just bite off the white part and leave the rest, although ive recently discovered that if you stack em up in a circle they resemble a corn without the cob which i found to be quite interesting. At the end of the day i still much rather a snickers or some sour gummy worms over candy corn any day.

  13. I honestly dislike candy corn. When I was little, I used to love candy corn and other sweets. One Halloween, I ate so much candy corn that my teeth hurt. Now that I’m older, I really don’t eat many sweets at all. However I do think that candy corn is a traditional candy and I am glad that it only comes with Halloween.

  14. I LOVE IT!

I am a big fan of candy corn, I love it. I love this time of year because it's candy corn time. I may be the only one of my siblings who enjoys candy corn. That always worked in my favor because after trick or treating I would take my brothers, cousins and friends candy corn. It always gave me a tooth ache but it was well worth it. I still can not believe people don't like candy corn. too bad. More for me, send me all your candy corn.

  15. I never liked candy corn. A couple of them is nice but after that it tastes horrible. Candy corn does become popular only at halloween time. You see this at almost every holiday. Christmas has trees and stockings, Easter has colorful eggs, Hanukah has candles, and Halloween has candy corn, costumes, and trick a treating. Its all part of tradition or the way I like to say it, "theme".

  16. I think candy corn is absolutely terrible. I would rather the house not take part in halloween and give no candy than to give that sorry excuse for sweets. It tastes like someone is playing a joke on you, with the texture of thickened chalk. If when I am older there is a house in my neighborhood that gives my child candy corn, I will personally go buy the eggs for my child to throw at their home.

  17. For a while, I thought I was the only one who hated candy corn. Something is wrong with anyone who would want to male candy vegetables of any kind. Vegetables themselves don't have a pleasant taste without seasoning and cooking them. It's similar to when medicine companies add artifical "fruit" flavor to medications. Medicine companies don't seem to realize that doesn't taste great either!

I have to disagree with the texture bring similar to thick chalk. It's like they tried to make a chewy candy abdominal failed at it. Or maybe that's the way it's supposed to be made...

  18. I strongly agree, candy corn is terrible. I would rather eat unions all day that eat a candy corn, and i hate unions. Ever since i was young and would go trick or treating i would hate to get candy corn, because it tasted so oily and made my teeth hurt. I always thought it was always way too sweet. I do believe that candy corn is a traditional candy when it comes to Halloween.

  19. I disagree completely, candy corn is the best holiday candy for Halloween. I always think of candy corn when it comes to Halloween. Candy corn could be a little oily or sweet to someone but I love the taste of this candy. The texture is a little funky and also leaves a weird taste in your mouth for awhile. I also recently found out at if you stack the candy corn up in a pile it creates the shape of a corn on the cob.

  20. I disagree, I absolutely love the taste of candy corn. I have such a sweet tooth. Halloween is my favorite time of year because of all the candy I get to eat. When I was younger in elementary school I remember in the cafeteria they would have a jar filled with candy corn and everyone had to guess how many candy corns were in the jar. I don't understand how people could hate candy corn it's delicious and cute.

  21. I agree with Lewis Black with the point that candy corn is only popular during Halloween. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen anyone eat candy corn in any month that isn’t October or November. However, I don’t necessarily dislike candy corn. I don’t find that it tastes like oils and Winder as Lewis Black says. Candy corn has always helped me get into the Halloween spirit. I find candy corn to be a very unique and unlike any other type of treat. Ultimately, I believe candy corn is an important part of Halloween tradition.

  22. I agree Candy Corn does not taste good nor is it my favorite candy. I actually don’t even remember how it tastes exactly because it has been years since i’ve had it. I only see Candy Corn around when its Halloween but even when it’s time for that holiday to come around candy corn isn’t the first thing I think about as the traditional candy. I think about snickers, starbursts, kit-kat, skittles, etc. When Halloween came around in my middle school/ junior high school candy corn was only in a bowls on a teachers desk and they would actually give us the good candy. They would have the candy corn as decorations. I don’t even see myself tasting candy corn again especially if I haven’t had it in a while.

  23. I agree with Lewis Black I like candy corn and I like the fact that it comes out more during Halloween. It is a tradition in my family to get candy corn and we all eat it. My family is big on Halloween and my mother always buy a ton of candy corn. I don't eat candy corn any other month out of the year or I would probably get sick of it because it is very sweet. Candy corn is a good idea of fall and Halloween, it makes a lot of people remember their childhoods.

  24. I strongly agree, candy corn is terrible terrible. Lewis black was right about the whole thing. Candy corn does come more out during halloween, but they still have it in the store year round. My mother always buys a big back thinking my family is going to eat it. But i'll always remember the first time trying it. and that's something i'll be scarred with for the rest of my life.

  25. Candy corn is very cool and a great holiday candy. The first thing I think of when it comes to this candy is Halloween. I don't really like the taste but I like what candy corn represents. Candy corn isn't going anywhere soon because it represents the Halloween season which will never fade.

  26. It is funny because is the first time that I hear or read about candy, and I am not a big fan of candies because I do not like the taste that they left in my mouth and if a candy taste like oil, I definitely will not feel tempted to try it or taste it.
